The Hidden Messages Within Sustainable Development

Sharon Beder is a professor in the Faculty of Arts at the University of Wollongong in New South Wales, Australia.

Her research has focused on how power relationships are maintained and challenged, particularly by corporations and professions. She has written 10 books, and many articles, book chapters and conference papers, as well as designing teaching resources and educational websites.

Beneath the Wisteria supporter, Numurkah’s Lou Cook, said: “I found the attached article whilst trawling the Internet some weeks ago but only read it this morning (March 29) and found it rather interesting especially when I noted the date of publication was 1994! I have never heard of the lady before and she raises some very interesting points”.

As Lou correctly points out, Sharon does, most certainly, make some interesting points, among them the public’s misunderstanding that sustainable development equates with environmental protection.

Sharon wrote The Hidden Messages Within Sustainable Development in 1994 and it is worth us spending 15 minutes now, in 2012, nearly 20 years later, reading something which is just as current, and important, today as it was then.
