The idea that private wants overwhelm public needs and is driving
the essence of climate change will be discussed Beneath the Wisteria in
Shepparton on Saturday, November 30.
Convener Robert McLean despairs that public needs are
frequently supplanted by private wants and the outcome is the inordinate use of
fossil-fuel powered energy leaving a legacy of damaging greenhouse gases.
Melbourne’s east-west road tunnel link is an example with
likely cost of a project conceived to answer what are largely private wants in
the $billions comes at the expense of vastly cheaper and more environmentally
friendly public needs, such as improved rail infrastructure.
Wisteria supporter, John Pettigrew, points to a simpler and
often more local happening in which a person wants to remove a tree, ignoring
the public good of the same tree.
People keen to talk about personal and community responses
to climate change are invited to gather beneath the wisteria at the northern end
of the Maude St Mall at 11:30am on Saturday, November 30.
Discussions last for about an hour, there is no charge, all
those interested are urged to attend, some public seating is available, but those
attending are urged to bring a folding chair.
Questions about Saturday’s gathering can be directed to Robert at 0400 502 199.
