We need optimism and must never let hope die

Optimism of hitherto unseen dimensions will be needed if we are to escape from the present human-created dilemma that is climate change.

It was the late author Studs Terkel who said that hope dies last and almost regardless of the prism through which we view the present difficulty, hope may well be our final and only option

The world’s “responsible men” (the men and women with their hands on the levers of the industrial/military/economic machine) continue to bet the planet as they pursue goals that enrich a few and leave most wallowing in serious inequality.

Our blatant use of polluting energy sources, fossil fuels, has accelerated the world’s confrontation with climate change and it is clear to many that solutions using renewable energy are simply waiting for us to put them to work.

However, that is not happening although anyone alert to developments in the world must be aware of our need for clean energy.

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has clearly told us that life on earth as we know it is seriously at risk unless we embrace different ways of energizing human activities and along with that, change our behaviours.

A story published in the Guardian headed: “IPCC report: world must urgently switch to clean sources of energy” again stresses the importance of stepping away from fossil fuels.
