In a report on activities for last year she said: “High
quality environmental education and applied research and teaching that responds
to critical societal needs and influences policy and decision making is
essential to provide creative responses to the multi-faceted environmental
problems that Australia and the world face.”
In an introduction to the report she said:
“Environmental Management is no longer a peripheral issue.
In the 21st century, environmental concerns and more broadly sustainability are
providing both greater constraints and greater opportunities.
“Governments and NGOs, along with business, industry and
finance leaders, are increasingly faced with environmental issues as a
strategic concern and a regulatory reality.
“It has been recognised that the challenges are complex and
interconnected, and that solutions cannot come from one single area of
research, profession or sector of society. Real world problems do not fit into
neat disciplinary ‘silos’.
“Interdisciplinary education is one of the keys to address
the grand challenges facing global and Australian society,” she wrote.
