Taking the 'Six steps to Climate Leadrship'

V

ictoria’s Andrews Government has started to outline its priorities for climate change policy and reducing Victoria’s emissions.

 Now, more than six months after being elected, it’s time for the Victorian Government to turn its promise into an action plan for a safe climate and clean energy economy.

Charting a path towards a sustainable, prosperous and fair Victoria will require strong leadership and a departure from the business-as-usual approach to environmental policy. Nowhere is the need for leadership more urgent than in climate policy.

This report sets out six ambitious yet achievable steps the Victorian Government should take to deliver that leadership:

-      Commit to a goal of decarbonisation for the state;

-      Strengthen the Climate Change Act;

-      Make Victoria the home ground for Australia’s renewable energy industry;

-      Cut energy waste;

-      Retire our dirtiest power stations; and

-      Rule out new fossil fuel projects for Victoria.

These are the most important steps required for leadership on climate change in Victoria, though additional measures could be included in a comprehensive policy agenda, tackling emissions sources such as land use and agriculture.
