The struggle to 'stay out of the trenches'

S

ome who fear the dangers of global warming argue that activists need to “stay out of the trenches”.

Rather, they say, than arguing endlessly about the realities of our changing climate and being bogged down in pointless debates about whether or not the science can, should be believed, we need to spend our time preparing for and adapting to a different future.

The argument makes sense and has legitimacy until those who refute the science resort to spreading blatant mistruths as has been the case recently in the United Kingdom.

And those deceptions are not just mentioned on an obscure blog (such as this), but are given prominence in major conservative tabloids.

Writing on ClimateProgress, Joe Romm said, “U.K. tabloids, conservative media, and others are (mis)reporting that the Earth will enter a “mini ice age” in the 2030s. In fact, not only is the story wrong, the reverse is actually true.

“The Earth is headed toward an imminent speed-up in global warming, as many recent studies have made clear, like this June study by NOAA. Indeed, a March study, entitled “Near-term acceleration in the rate of temperature change,” makes clear that a stunning acceleration in the rate of global warming is around the corner — with Arctic warming rising 1°F per decade by the 2020s!”

Of course, it must be mentioned, those unable to accept the climate science, are delighted to see us fighting in the trenches as that allow them to continue with their destructive behaviour.
