Flights were
canceled, long lines formed at grocery stores and shovels were hard to
find Thursday ahead of a potentially crippling snowstorm that threatened to
slam the South, Mid-Atlantic and Northeast through the weekend.
Snowfall could approach 2 feet or more in some locations,
including the Baltimore and Washington, D.C., metro areas, where a rare
blizzard warning will go into effect Friday afternoon. Air and road travel is
expected to grind to a halt throughout much of the weekend as forecasters
predict no way out of a monster storm that could hit 75 million people.
"Heavy snow and blowing snow will cause dangerous
conditions and will be a threat to life and property," the National Weather Service warned
