'Green veins' to slow 'cement creep'

Green veins would stretch along Melbourne's streets bringing relief from summer heat and increasing the ambience of the inner city under a bold new vegetation plan.

The garden state would transform into the garden city.

A not-for-profit group, People and Parks Foundation, is now looking for ways to combat the city's cement creep with a new "green veins" vision, a localised version of Melbourne's green wedge areas.

The group call it the Urban Forest Project. The idea, according to People and Parks Foundation chairman Professor John Stanley, is to connect isolated green spots to create corridors with greater benefit for flora and fauna and easy access for residents.
