The crisis, the Times points to is a war, a major terrorist
attack or large-scale riots or protests, all of which, it says, are entirely
possible.
It fears for American democracy when the country has a president
with authoritarian tendencies and the country has institutions that have come
unmoored. “That poses a serious threat to American democracy,” it says.
Each of the crises, The Times points to can be, have been
and are being caused by climate change and to further loosen the hold that not
only America has on democracy, but the rest of the world, the U.S.
president-elect, Donald Trump appears to be of similar ilk to Australia’s
former Prime Minster, Tony Abbott, who publically declared climate change to be
“crap”.
America is second only to China in terms of carbon dioxide emissions
and if Donald Trump has his way, the U.S. will soon reclaim that crown, but at
a cost that will be seen in the continuing watering down of democracy.
