Push needed to speed up electric car revolution in Australi

Environment and Energy Minister Josh Frydenberg says the electric car revolution is coming. Writing in an opinion piece published by Fairfax Media,  Mr Frydenberg compared the arrival of the electric car to the iPhone and cloud computing as a disruptive technology that would bring great environmental and economic benefits.

But while Australians have been early adopters of other technologies, the electric car revolution is coming too slowly in this country. The minister pointed out that there are some 2 million electric vehicles on the world's roads – but just 4000 in Australia; they represent a tiny 0.1 per cent of new vehicle sales here. New Zealand, with one-fifth of our population, has the same number of electric vehicles.

(Yes, Australia needs electric cars, but not privately owned electric cars. A bold, forward-thinking government would be planning for and building a sophisticated public transit system based on electric vehicles from autonomous pod-like personal transport modules and small freight movement pods to larger inter-town and city electric trains - the electric car is disruptive, but our thinking and the changes we make need to be even more disruptive - Robert McLean)
