Paper giant wants to burn Melbourne's rubbish to produce electricity

Hundreds of thousands of tonnes of Melbourne's household rubbish would be burnt and turned into energy at a proposed giant power plant in the Latrobe Valley.

Australian Paper wants to build a $600 million incinerator next to its paper mill at Maryvale. The facility would use the waste to produce 225 megawatts of electricity to power the mill and would sell energy back into the grid.
