A crippling drought across three states has triggered federal government plans to offer more help to rural Australia amid estimates that more than 40 per cent of farmers are now suffering from the record dry.

The Turnbull government is canvassing ways to extend its support payments for farmers as the drought drags on, with Bureau of Meteorology figures showing last month was the nation’s third-driest May on record.
