From today’s Shepparton News - “Melting ice raises seas”.
Antarctica has lost about three trillion tonnes of ice since 1992, an amount which corresponds to a sea-level rise of about 8 mm, according to international researchers.
Using 24 different satellitebased estimates, the researchers show warm oceans have driven a tripling of ice-loss in western Antarctica between 1992 and 2017— from 53 billion to 159 billion tonnes a year.
Ice loss on the Antarctic peninsula also increased from about seven billion to 33 billion tonnes a year.
The study is part of a special collection of articles on Antarctica, which includes Australian research, on the role of the Southern Ocean in sea-level rise.
The articles are published in the science journal Nature.
