As we are all aware, big supermarkets such as Coles and Woolworths are no longer going to be using plastic bags, which is fantastic news.

However, we need to be doing more in order to reduce Australia’s waste, because it was recently announced that China will no longer be taking our recycling, which was as much as 30 per cent before the ban took place.
While it might be hard to get big chain companies like McDonald’s or Coke to use less plastic, we can make a start by encouraging local businesses to go green by introducing bring-your own-container policies, so as to avoid Styrofoam boxes and plastic containers.
After all, those straws and containers are used only for a few minutes until they are eventually thrown away and left to sit in landfill, because most fast food containers are made from soft plastics, which cannot be recycled.
The average Australian produces 1.5 tonnes of waste each year.
Most of the waste could be avoided because it is derived from plastic and food packaging.
Change starts with the individual.
If we each make small changes to our lives, such as investing in reusable straws, bringing your own cup to cafes, re-using bags for fruit and vegetables, and starting up a compost bin, we can all make a huge impact on the environment, an impact that’s for the better.
