Environment Victoria’s Mark Wakeham is retiring.
The CEO has announced that he will be stepping back step back from the environmental front-line at the end of the year and taking a break for a few months before “throwing myself into the next thing”.

Below is the letter Environment Victoria supporters of his intentions.
Dear climate movement comrades,
I’ve got some news from EV to share, which is that after over a decade at Environment Victoria, and 4 ½ years in the CEO role, I’m going to finish up at EV at the end of this year, after the Victorian election.
I feel really privileged to have worked with you all on the humble project of saving life on earth as we know it, and every day am inspired by both the actions of NGO and grassroots activists causing immense disruption to pollution as usual with creativity and persistence.
We’ll be sending out a message to EV supporters this evening, and there’s a few further thoughts in this blog and some details on the EV Board’s recruitment plans.
You all, like me, try and walk the precarious line of undertaking difficult, critical and future-facing work while also trying to live in and enjoy the moment and the people and places around you.
In Victoria we’re giving the state election campaign everything we can muster to get the best possible outcomes on climate and environment, but after that I’m going to slow down for a few months at least before throwing myself into the next thing (I’ve got no idea what that is yet).
Thankyou for your commitment, persistence, and passionate belief in a better world,
Mark.
Mark Wakeham
CEO Environment Victoria
