Jump in Shepparton urban living

Greater Shepparton’s population is predicted to rise to more than 83 000 by the year 2036.

City-specific analysis of data collected at the 2016 census reports the number of people living in the city is expected to rise by about 25 per cent across the next two decades.

Shepparton’s urban centre, including Kialla, is expected to grow faster still — by 30 per cent during the next 18 years to a population of more than 52 000 — finds census data analysis by id economics for Shepparton’s city council.

Mooroopna’s population is predicted to rise by 20 per cent and Tatura’s grow by more than 23 per cent during the same period.

City-wide, the number of people in Greater Shepparton — which sits at almost 67 000 currently — will rise by an average 1.25 per cent year-on-year until the mid-2030s.

This would mean an additional 18 000 people would have called the city home in the 20 years from 2016, an almost 28 per cent increase. The ‘Kialla Urban’ neighbourhood is expected to grow at an almost 2.7 per cent rate during this period and welcome almost 4000 new residents.

Meanwhile, the average household size will stay at about 2.5 people.

‘‘The greatest population change for the City of Greater Shepparton is forecast for the period from 2017 to 2021, which is expected to have a net increase of 4778 people,’’ the group reported on the data.

The average annual change is expected to peak at about 1.43 per cent by the year 2021.

Meanwhile, the figures report the city has seen a jump of about 6400 residents between 2006 and 2016.

The id analysis flags ‘‘significant development opportunities’’ in fringe areas like the north and south of Shepparton, as well as Mooroopna and Tatura.
