Australian firefighters deployed as California bushfires intensify

Los Angeles: A contingent of almost 200 firefighting personnel from Australia and New Zealand will head to the US today, to be deployed in California and its neighbouring states Oregon and Washington.

as a wildfire tears through Lakeport, California.
The team of 188 personnel includes fire management specialists and helicopter pilots.

NSW Emergency Services Minister Troy Grant said the Australians were "highly trained and have experience dealing with the type of fires that are currently threatening the US west coast.

"The request to have them help out is a testament to their professionalism, training and expertise," Mr Grant said.
