The head of the Australian Energy Regulator Paula Conboy will leave the energy watchdog and the national Energy Security Board in September, leaving the government scrambling for a new chief as its tries to push through a swathe of new regulations.

The AER was touted as the force behind the government’s planned ‘big sticks’ to drive down power prices, investigating the potential of a regulated energy price and forced divestment for companies behaving badly in the electricity market.
The government said it will soon begin the process for finding a replacement. Ms Conboy's replacement would also step into her role on the Energy Security Board.
