Recycling giant Sims Metal Management will enter the growing "waste-to-energy" industry, unveiling plans to build a series of plants around the world capable of turning into gas the residue left when cars are shredded.

Executives from the $2.3 billion listed recycling outfit told investors on Monday that the company would utilise its "competitive advantage" of owning 1.3 million tonnes of shredding waste per year to make its foray into the industry.
