Councils may be pushed to introduce kerbside food waste collection under a state government scheme to dramatically reduce rubbish sent to landfill.

The option is currently being considered as the Andrews government sets out key proposals to reform Victoria’s waste-collection system, which was thrown into crisis after China stopped accepting low-grade recycling material.
About a quarter of local councils already recycle food waste but a paper released by the state government proposes a major expansion of the service.
