Shake-up of WA's electricity laws tipped to cause renewable energy investment surge

A wave of renewable energy is set to wash over Western Australia's farming heartland under new laws that enable authorities to disconnect customers from the grid.
Stand-alone power technologies are a sunrise industry.
The WA Government has declared that making it easier for households in regional areas to cut their connection to the network could ultimately lead to lower power prices across the board.
As part of a package of legislation recently ushered through WA's Parliament, electricity distributor Western Power has been given the green light to roll out "stand-alone" power systems across the Wheatbelt.
The State-owned utility is expected to install up to 6,000 of the systems over the next 10 years across its regional and rural footprint, which covers the southwestern corner of the continent.
