What to Expect from the IPCC Climate and Land Report—and 5 Potential Solutions

On August 8, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) will release its Special Report on Climate Change and Land. The report will be finalized by governments during the first week of August, but the public outline indicates that we should expect insights on interactions between global landscapes and the climate, the impacts of land degradation on climate change, and how these impacts affect food security and other human development issues.

And as with last October’s Special Report on the 1.5 Degree Target, it’s unlikely that this new assessment will contain good news.

The land sector produces nearly 25 percent of global emissions, a situation which could worsen as climate change further compromises ecosystems that currently serve as carbon sinks, leading to increased emissions and harming biodiversity.

We know that “business as usual” got us here, but the sooner we transition to a sustainable path, the more of the planet—its resources, biodiversity and life support systems—we can save. The IPCC will have its own recommendations for policymakers, but here are some significant changes we can start to implement today.
