ur State and Federal Governments procrastinate in their response to global warming and so Local Government in some cases, pick the baton.



Geelong plans to lower it carbon emissions.

Several smaller Victorian towns have targeted serious emissions reduction targets and Geelong, Victoria’s second largest urban centre has update its 2011 Low Carbon Growth Plan (LCGP) .

That plan outlined the opportunities for Greater Geelong to move towards a low carbon economy and now four years on, the update highlights the progress that has been made and examines the plan in light of advancements in low emissions technologies and changes in Geelong’s economy.

Pathways calculator provides model for Australian economy

T

he 2050 pathways calculator is a simplified energy and emissions model of the Australian economy.

It allows users to change a range of inputs relating to emissions reduction activities and see how those changes affect energy and emissions between now and 2050.

It provides a simple and interactive way to explore the trade-offs and interdependencies between different options for decarbonising.

The UK Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) created and shared the original tool upon which much of this calculator was based.

This tool does not calculate the cost of achieving the alternative pathways, but the choice of inputs for each emissions reduction activity have been defined based on a spectrum between business-as-usual and ambitious but plausible potentials drawing on best available research
