Adani facing government probe into latest coal terminal water release into wetlands

The Queensland Government is investigating whether Indian mining firm Adani has breached its environmental licence for the second time in two years with the release of coal-laden floodwaters from its coal port at Abbot Point in the state's north.

Adani's Abbot Point storage dam released water into
the adjacent Caley Valley wetlands earlier this month.

It comes as Adani revealed it did not apply for an emergency permit to dump more polluted water into the sensitive Caley Valley wetlands during the north Queensland floods last week.

The company told the ABC that Abbot Point operators were confident they could manage floodwaters with new infrastructure, but were then overwhelmed by flows from neighbouring properties.

University of Melbourne to lead renewable hydrogen research for transport and power generation

University of Melbourne, together with University of New South Wales (UNSW), today announced an $8.6 million research project investigating the performance and value of efficient, heavy duty, reciprocating engines running on renewable hydrogen. The research will be partly funded by the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA).

The three-and-a-half year project will involve close collaboration with leading industry partners Energy Power Systems Australia, Meridian Energy Australia, Continental and MAN.

Professor Michael Brear is the Director of the Melbourne Energy Institute at the University of Melbourne and said the project will focus on the use of renewable hydrogen to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions from power generation and transportation.

Mount Lyell copper mine owners aim for zero emissions at restart following million-dollar upgrade

Copper Mines of Tasmania (CMT) has an ambitious plan to make Mt Lyell on Tasmania's west coast Australia's first zero emissions mine when it reopens.

The 134-year-old mine is looking to electric vehicles,
 hydro and geothermal to reach zero emissions.

The Mount Lyell mine has been under care and maintenance since 2014 and was the site of three fatal accidents over the past 4 years.

CMT general manger Peter Walker said the company has spent $100 million since 2014 maintaining the mine and is spending a million dollars on feasibility studies investigating mine modernisation.

He is not aware any other mine in the world has reached that target, but he said is a unique opportunity because of access to Tasmania's hydro power.
