Our blatant belief in
and addiction to the economy, finance and its minutiae is distressing and
diametrically opposed to climate change abatement.
Our pursuit of money blinds us to what it is the world
really needs and it is not more money, rather more equity, that is a more even
distribution of money, more collaboration along with an understanding that the
rude pursuit of profit is the engine driving climate change.
Rather than conclude every news report with a detailed
examination of how the world is performing financially, that 60 second spot
should be dedicated to explaining how we are performing in relation to the
greatest crisis humanity has ever faced.
Climatologists from around the world, I’m sure, would be more
than willing to provide daily updates on how humanity is performing in relation
to climate change mitigation.
We hear every day about the value of the dollar, the price
of oil, the value of gold, but nothing about something which has the potential
to make them all irrelevant and subsequently of little or no interest.
We need to hear every day, or whenever a news report appears
about the carbon content of our atmosphere, not the value of the dollar or any
of those other indicators that are little more than gambling signals.
Robert McLean.
