Senator illustrates difficulties we face in combatting climate change

A conversation on Radio National this morning stands as an illustration of the distinct difficulties facing those of us concerned about human-induced climate change.

Liberal Senator Ian McDonald.
Liberal Senator Ian McDonald talked with Breakfast host, Fran Kelly, about yesterday’s observations by Prime Minister Tony Abbott who was not blatantly critical of the ABC, but appeared to be setting the stage to limit its influence.

Senator McDonald has a history of questioning the role of our national broadcaster and it wasn’t long before the discussion turned to “balance”, then asylum seekers, the performance of the Navy and then, expectedly, climate change.

He accused the ABC of going for weeks about minor matters, in which he included climate change (“don’t get me going on that”, he said) arguing for “balance”, suggesting that the idea that all scientists agreed was clearly wrong and never was some like Bob Carter allowed to speak. Bob Carter’s work and thoughts have been seriously questioned by highly credentialed climate scientists.

The “balance” Senator McDonald argues for has eroded humanity’s chance of ever mitigating climate change.

About 97% or the world’s scientists agree that the world faces a significant difficulty; a difficulty that can only be resolved with a significant change to our behaviours, but the celebrated “balance” argue for by Senator McDonald and his ilk has given oxygen to a whole raft of doubters and skeptics who can be easily shown to be in the pay of the fossil fuel companies.
