Beneath the Wisteria friend recognised in national competition


Beneath the Wisteria friend David Karoly has been put among the 20th Century’s most celebrated scientists.

Radio National have over the past few weeks been running a competition connected with the “Gold and Incas, The Lost Worlds of Peru” exhibition presently showing at the National Gallery of Australia.

Listeners were encouraged to imagine an artwork they would like to see created to recognise and acknowledge what Australians have lost in the 20th century.

A prize of a trip for two to Canberra, accommodation and a visit to see the exhibition, accompanied by science show presenter, Robyn Williams, was awarded to one person from each Australian state and territory.

The ACT entrant, Sandra Elton suggested a hologram depicting the genius of Australia’s 20th Century scientists and David Karoly was among some celebrated company including:

Frank Fenner - the eradication of smallpox

Howard Florey – for penicillin

Mark Oliphant – Pet scanner

Graham Clark – Bionic ear

Fiona Stanley – Spina bifida baby.

David was included on the list as one who had warned Australians about the catastrophic consequences of unchecked climate change.

He is a Professor of Atmospheric Science in the School of Earth Sciences and the ARC Centre of Excellence for Climate System Science at the University of Melbourne.

He is an internationally recognised expert in climate change and climate variability, including greenhouse climate change, stratospheric ozone depletion and inter-annual climate variations due to El Niño-Southern Oscillation.
