Ulrich Beck
understood sociology and through that had a distinct appreciation of climate
change.
Sadly that innovative and inspirational thinker died on New
Year’s Day.
The professor at the London School of Economics andPolitical Science had a long and profitable engagement with the Department of
Sociology at the LSE where he taught legions of Masters and PhD students, gave
regular public lectures, and was one of the most active contributors to the
British Journal of Sociology.
LSE director, Craig Calhoun, said, “Beck approached
sociology with passion, seeking to illuminate the big issues of the age and
place of individual lives within them. His writings were full of metaphors and
creative efforts to capture a changing, challenging reality.”
A tribute entitled “What Future For World Society?” to mark
the life of Ulrich Beck is planned for February 24 by the school’s Department
of Sociology.
Beck is known to many for his early 90s book “Risk Society:Towards a New Modernity” that was one of many influential books to bear his
name.
