The end of fossil fuels may help slow climate change

Climate change is rooted in excessive use of fossil fuelled-based energy and along with that our reckless consumption of energy-rich goods.

The idea that the end of fossil fuels, or at least peak in those resources, will slow climate change has been explored by Gary Ellem.

Writing on The Conversation, Ellem, a Conjoint Academic in Sustainability at University of Newcastle, has suggested that peak fuels may be the most profound way that peak fuels to initiate a low-emissions future.

His story, headed: “Peak fossil fuel won’t stop climate change – but it could help”, tells readers that limits to fossil fuel availability might take climate Armageddon off the table.

“Although,” Ellem writes, “we will still need to keep some fossil fuels in the ground for the best chance of keeping warming below 2C”.
