Six years ago, Malcolm Turnbull lost the leadership of the
Liberal Party to Tony Abbott during a bitter tussle over the Coalition's direction
on climate change policies. On that day, any serious efforts by the Coalition
to develop emissions reduction strategies all but vanished.
In a frank opinion piece written just days after that 2009
defeat, Mr Turnbull declared that any such policy produced while Mr Abbott led
the Liberal Party "will simply be a con". He said the Liberal Party
had no intention of doing anything about climate change because Mr Abbott and
his band of conservative supporters fundamentally did not believe the science
that showed global warming was caused by human activities.
