Engaging with Socrates to combat climate change

Steve Neumann - helping
kids build a civil society
through philosophy.
Philosophy and climate change appear unrelated.

Most casual observers see no connection whatsoever, but they are wrong.

A true civil society is one built in such a way that it is conscious of its behaviour and understands both the implications and complications of how it lives.

Beyond that a philosophically aware society stands ready to change its behaviour and in the case of climate change, brought on by our voracious consumptive ways and perverse addiction to the economy and growth, it also understands the need to live in a more restrained and sustainable manner.

Steve Neumann writes about the importance of engaging our young kids in philosophy and in conclusion he says: “If we fail to turn second-graders into Socrates, our kids may end up becoming expert at making a living, but they will be incompetent at creating a civil society.”

Read what Steve Neumann has to say about kids and philosophy in The Washington Post - “Why kids —now more than ever — need to learn philosophy. Yes, philosophy.”
