Boom to bust for national mungbean crop as extreme heat wilts crops

Hot weather and low subsoil moisture contributed
to this poor mungbean crop on Queensland's
 Darling Downs.
It had been shaping up as Australia's best mungbean season ever, but now, thanks to last week's extreme weather, it could prove disastrous.

Mungbean plants wilted across most growing regions and that is likely to result in low yields — a crushing disappointment for growers who had hoped to cash in on high prices.

Australian Mungbean Association president Mark Schmidt said the dry, hot weather had been cruel to growers.

"It was going to be a dream year for everyone involved in mungbeans," he said.

"Last year we had a very good crop, very good yields, excellent prices.

"We sold probably as much seed this year as we did last year, but the crop has been drastically reduced due to the dry weather, hot conditions and the crop yielding very, very low.”
