The decision to grant NT's largest single permit for land clearing is being challenged in the Supreme Court out of concern the clearing will ramp up greenhouse gas emissions.

| The decision to issue Maryfield Station a permit to clear native bushland has been challenged in the Supreme Court. |
The case is the first of its kind in the NT and will test the way courts respond to issues around climate change — given the predicted rise in cases that require courts to consider it.
In November last year a permit was approved to clear more than 20,000 hectares of native vegetation at Maryfield Station, 550 kilometres south-west of Darwin.
But the Environment Centre NT questioned the validity of the decision-making process used by the Pastoral Lands Board when it approved the permit — as it was never required to consider the impact on climate change.
