Parts of New South Wales are expecting some of the best rainfalls in almost a year this weekend, but the "hit and miss" event is not expected to put a dent in the drought that is gripping the state.

The north west plains including Tamworth and Moree could receive between 30 to 60 millimetres of rain, with possible severe thunderstorms.
In the state's north-east, rain is expected to bring relief for firefighters battling blazes.
The state's south and south-west however are expected to miss out on the system entirely.
July 2018 was one of the driest on record, and the rain would be a welcome relief to drought-affected farmers.
