Morwell: A powerhouse in the grip of coal transition.

Whether you ask a 22-year-old Rohingya refugee who arrived in Morwell a year ago or the longtime owner of a Traralgon cafe, there is one thing on everyone’s mind: jobs.
Jobs are on the minds of most everyone in Morwell.
“Employment is the biggest issue. It’s very hard to get a job, says Amina Khatun, who is among 12 Rohingya families living in Morwell. “Jobs and bringing industry and growth to the area,” says Chris Vilcins, the owner of the Green Door Cafe.

The National candidate for the seat, Sheridan Bond, the senior vice-president of the state party, concurs. “Jobs is the big thing. That’s the big talking point.” Her rival, Labor’s Mark Richards, who lost his own job when the Hazelwood power station shut last year, says: “We have to keep going for the jobs, we really do.”
