To build back better, we need to plan now

One thing that seems clear is that following this period of massive social transformation we will emerge in a dramatically different world.

The Andrews government needs to modernise our ageing energy grid.

Immediate relief for the sickest and most affected must remain the priority, but we also need to ensure governments are making the right choices to get us on the path towards a more sustainable society that is also more resilient to shocks.
Our self-imposed hibernation will need to be followed by concerted plans to kick-start economic activity – a once-in-a-generation moment that will shape the kind of society we have. Morwell: A powerhouse in the grip of coal transition.

Whether you ask a 22-year-old Rohingya refugee who arrived in Morwell a year ago or the longtime owner of a Traralgon cafe, there is one thing on everyone’s mind: jobs.
Jobs are on the minds of most everyone in Morwell.
“Employment is the biggest issue. It’s very hard to get a job, says Amina Khatun, who is among 12 Rohingya families living in Morwell. “Jobs and bringing industry and growth to the area,” says Chris Vilcins, the owner of the Green Door Cafe.

The National candidate for the seat, Sheridan Bond, the senior vice-president of the state party, concurs. “Jobs is the big thing. That’s the big talking point.” Her rival, Labor’s Mark Richards, who lost his own job when the Hazelwood power station shut last year, says: “We have to keep going for the jobs, we really do.”
