Dinner Parties and Denial: TFW You Accept Climate Science… Just Not Reality

Mary Annaïse Heglar.
It happens all the time. I get invited to a dinner party, lured with promises of good conversation and copious vegan options. The big group breaks into small groups and then the small talk starts. Someone eventually asks, “what do you do?” My answer—that I edit environmental policy—is met with an impressed “you must know a lot about the environment, then!” I confirm the suspicion and people draw closer with intense focus and an air of “finally, someone can tell us the truth about climate change!”

And I do tell the truth. Climate change is bad. Real bad. Imagine a terrible nightmare. Multiply it by five. Then by 5,000. Now you’re getting the picture. But just because it’s bad doesn’t mean we sit back and let it get worse. Yes, you should shrink your personal carbon footprint. But, ultimately, we need large-scale actions from governments and corporations—that’s who needs to be held accountable.
