Adani still has a long march ahead before its Carmichael coal mine opens.

The final approval for Adani's plans to develop a coal mine in Queensland's Galilee Basin looks likely to come well after the federal election, with a slew of state and federal hurdles to clear.

Supporters of the Carmichael mine were buoyed by Tuesday's announcement that federal Environment Minister Melissa Price had ticked off the mine's controversial groundwater plans.

The mine - intended to extract 15 million tonnes of coal a year in its first stage for a $2 billion outlay - was one major step closer to getting started, they hoped.
