The nation's peak farming group has backed a Labor plan to curb greenhouse gas pollution from agriculture but described a pledged crackdown on mass land-clearing as “worrying".

A future Shorten government would reduce land sector emissions by expanding a voluntary scheme that financially rewards farmers who plant trees, retain vegetation or reduce carbon pollution through other means. It would also exempt the farm sector from having to meet firm carbon reduction targets.
