Former prime minister Tony Abbott has told British climate change sceptics that a 'gradual lift in global temperatures' may be beneficial and likened climate scientists to the 'thought police’.

On Monday night in London Mr Abbott told the Global Warming Policy Foundation's annual lecture extreme weather events were not getting worse, but did more damage because there is 'more to destroy’.

'Beware the pronouncement, 'the science is settled',' Mr Abbott said, according to a speech posted on the think tank's website.

'It's the spirit of the Inquisition, the thought-police down the ages.'

Abbott stands on a lonely isthmus of climate change denial

Australia’s Prime Minister, Tony Abbott, has enjoyed strong support during his time at PM from conservative governments in both the UK and Canada.

Times, however, it seems are changing faster than our PM Chameleon can change his colours and now he stands on a lonely isthmus of climate change denial with both the Conservative Governments of UK and Canada quite different views.

Canada, who had stood with Abbott and his climate denial coalition, has now indicated its support for a United Nations climate fund to assist poor nations to cope with global warming; something Mr Abbott had rejected describing it as "socialism masquerading as environmentalism".

The Sydney Morning Herald discusses that in a story headed: “Red faces for Tony Abbott on Green Climate Fund”.

Along with that, the British conservative government has indicated its seriousness about tackling climate change, as reported in an Age story headed: “Why Britain's Tories are Earth's best friends”.

The reality, and urgency, escapes the understanding of most

The reality of climate change, and the associated urgency, escapes the understanding of most.

It actually kills, disables and desecrates people, things and environments.

It’s a reality few of us have the emotional and physical capacity to face, yet it a change that sooner, rather than later, that each of us is going to confront.

A story in the British newspaper, The Telegraph, headed: “Climate change means catastrophe in UK, not café culture says professor” alerts us, again, to the reality of our changing climate.

The Director of the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research, Professor Kevin Anderson, said Government and local authorities were failing to grasp the risks to Britain of global warming.

Gambling on extinction

It seems now that gambling on extinction is to become as common as betting on one horse besting another.

George Monbiot told the Guardian readers that the British gambling company, Ladbrokes, had been offering odds on the conservation of various fish stocks.

In the column: “Betting on Extinction”, Monbiot told readers, “Again and again over the past few decades, our fishing industry has clamoured noisily to cut its own throat, then responded with astonishment and fury when it collapses as a result. Is there a clearer example of being blinded to your long-term interests by short-term greed?”

So now it seems that in some bizarre sense, we can profit from species extinction, rather than be clearly worse off.
