Former prime minister Malcolm Turnbull has criticised the Morrison government's emissions reductions plans at a critical point in international negotiations, while a trade analyst warns Australia's relationship with the European Union could be soured by the perception it's "weaseling out" of its climate commitments.

Energy and Emissions Reduction Minister Angus Taylor is in Madrid representing Australia at the United Nations Climate Change Conference, also known as COP25.
He is arguing to preserve the right to count Australia's over-achievement on Kyoto Protocol commitments towards the Paris commitment to reduce emissions from 2005 levels by at least 26 per cent by 2030.
Most of the 185 signatories to the Paris agreement don't count their carry-over credits - including European Union nations - with just Australia and potentially Brazil, Russia or the Ukraine seeking to do so.
