Science literacy in Parliament

An understanding, or appreciation of climate change, pushes us to have some grasp of science.

And that can range from acute (such as a climate scientist) or little more than a passing interest, as would be the case for those who might consider themselves, laymen.

However, as our world becomes more complex and more dependent on the intricacies of science (it always has been we now just have a sounder grasp of what it does, how it works and what its impacts are), we each have an inherent responsibility, at least pay some heed to how our lives depend upon it.

And just this morning on the ABC’s “Ockham’s Razor”, Robyn Williams allowed us to hear Nick Sharp talk about science literacy,

o say that Robyn Williams is a bit of a legend of science broadcasting on the radio is a bit like saying David Attenborough is a dab hand at nature documentaries on the telly.

The “legend” epithet just feels a bit superfluous but is, in any case, annoyingly necessary to introduce a broadcaster to those not familiar.

Williams has presented more than 2000 episodes of The Science Show on ABC Radio National since it was first broadcast in August 1975.

Perhaps the only thing as synonymous with The Science Show as Williams is the microphone he uses – a curious but faithful lump of black plastic that he has used since first joining the ABC in 1972 (I got to talk down it myself once).

Naomi Oreskes has dedicated her life to helping the world understand the realities of climate change.

The Professor of the History of Science and Affiliated Professor of Earth and Planetary Sciences at Harvard University recently appeared with Robyn Williams on “The Science Show” on Radio National to discuss her latest book.

That book, “The Collapse of Western Civilization: A View from the Future” co-authored by Erik M. Conway, is in fact a novel, based on hard scientific evidence from the International Panel of Climate Change (IPCC).

The conversation – “The Collapse of Western Civilization?” was broadcast by Radio National on August 16 this year.
