Melbourne weather: Severe weather warning in place as damaging winds, heavy rain set to lash city.

More rain could fall in Melbourne on Sunday than is usually recorded for the entire month of April with damaging winds and possible flash flooding forecast.

By 7am on Sunday, the State Emergency Service had responded to more than 140 requests for help across Victoria. But the emergency service said Saturday's storm was just a teaser to Sunday's worsening weather.

The Bureau of Meteorology predicts up to 60 millimetres could fall in Melbourne, higher than April's average monthly rainfall. Areas including the Dandenong Ranges and Yarra Valley could cop as much as 80 millimetres.

A severe weather warning has been issued for a large part of the state, while flash flooding warnings are in place for Bacchus Marsh and Geelong.

Floodwaters creep towards the Glenelg Inn.

Floodwaters inundated a small Victorian town in the state's west on Saturday night, forcing a household to evacuate.

The Glenelg River at Casterton reached major flood levels overnight on Saturday and into Sunday, rising from 5.63 metres at 6.30pm to 6.10 metres about 4am.

State Emergency Service media officer Bruce Farquharson said the water level had barely dropped since its overnight peak.

"It's been hanging on pretty well, it's only dropped two centimetres since then," he on Sunday morning

Victoria's chilly, windy and showery week

Tie down your outdoor furniture and grab your warmest coat – Victoria is set for a chilly, windy and showery week.

In Melbourne, the mercury is set to to plunge to as low as 7 degrees some nights, with highs of just 12 degrees on some days. We're in for squally winds, rain and possibly hail, according to the Bureau of Meteorology.

Across the state, flood warnings have been issued for nine locations, and on Monday heavy snow falls are forecast for Alpine areas.

State Emergency Service spokeswoman Susan Davie said volunteers were preparing some communities for floods.
