Jane Fonda accepts Bafta award during arrest at climate protest

Jane Fonda accepted a prestigious award from Bafta Los Angeles while being led away in handcuffs after being arrested during climate emergency protests.

to civil disobedience by Greta Thunberg.

The actor and activist was honoured with the Stanley Kubrick award for excellence in film at the annual Bafta Britannia ceremony. However, she could not be at the Beverly Hilton in person to accept the prize and, as is customary, sent a video message instead.

Footage of Fonda being arrested in Washington DC last week was shown to the audience on big screens. The Oscar-winning actor shouted, “Bafta, thank you” as she was led away. “I’m very honoured,” she added.

BBC admits ‘we get climate change coverage wrong too often’

The BBC has accepted it gets coverage of climate change “wrong too often” and told staff: “You do not need a ‘denier’ to balance the debate.”

 The BBC has been criticised for interviews with the
 former chancellor Nigel Lawson, a noted climate denier. 

In a briefing note sent to all staff warning them to be aware of false balance, the corporation has offered a training course on how to report on global warming. The move follows a series of apologies and censures for failing to challenge climate sceptics during interviews, including Nigel Lawson.

The briefing note, obtained by the website Carbon Brief, was sent on Thursday by Fran Unsworth, the BBC’s director of news and current affairs. It includes a statement of BBC editorial policy that begins: “Climate change has been a difficult subject for the BBC, and we get coverage of it wrong too often.”

We need something better than a 'war-like footing'

Many argue that to effectively address the dilemmas of climate change the world needs to put itself on a “war-like footing”.

Such a metaphor is accurate in terms of the urgency the world faces, but for many it conjures images that are distasteful and so disengage many from the actions they need to take.

The need for a more universally accepted term that represents the level of significance that 'wartime like scale and speed' does is presently being much discussed by members of the Victorian Climate Action Network (VCAN).

Member, Luke Taylor recently said that there is still a big prize out there for anyone who can come up with a more universally accepted term that represents the level of significance that “wartime like scale and speed”.

Considering that a story on Grist by David Roberts headed: “What would ‘wartime mobilization’to fight climate change look like?” seems relevant.
