I was wrong. This is environmentalism’s biggest problem

The problem with environmentalism is that this means nothing for most people. We need to begin equating this to real-world problems, without fear-mongering.

Let’s think for a moment about what 1.5°C of warming will mean for the planet. 48cm of sea level rises. 16% increase in the number of heatwave days. Complete meltdown of the Arctic ice.

(It would also be quite useful to give them credible but simple explanations of climate science, but that’s just wishful thinking.)

So, how exactly does one go about this?

Scrap value: Leftovers join green bin collection in war on food waste

Lawn clippings, leaves, prunings from the garden - that's what most people put in their green bins.
Lynton Tapp and Jessica Alice, aka the Leftover Lovers,
hold a cooking demonstration at Beaumaris Farmers Market.
But now residents in a handful of Victorian municipalities can throw in all manner of food scraps for collection.

At the same time, businesses and organisations are increasingly repurposing organic waste to reduce landfill costs and improve their environmental credentials.

Glen Eira Council in Melbourne's east is the latest to jump on the food recycling bandwagon.

It will change its green waste collection from May 1 to include such items as fruit and vegetable scraps, soiled paper and cardboard, and even meat and fish.
