Greta Thunberg nominated for Nobel peace prize.

Greta Thunberg, the founder of the Youth Strike for Climate movement, has been nominated for the Nobel peace prize, just ahead of the biggest day yet of global action.

 ‘I am honoured and very grateful for this nomination,’ said Thunberg. 

Thunberg began a solo protest in Sweden in August but has since inspired students around the globe. Strikes are expected in 1,659 towns and cities in 105 countries on Friday, involving hundreds of thousands of young people.

“We have proposed Greta Thunberg because if we do nothing to halt climate change it will be the cause of wars, conflict and refugees,” said Norwegian Socialist MP Freddy André Øvstegård. “Greta Thunberg has launched a mass movement which I see as a major contribution to peace.”

State election candidates Beneath the Wisteria on Saturday

The three people who have so far nominated for the seat of Shepparton in November’s Victorian election will speak Beneath the Wisteria on Saturday.

the Maude St Mall on Saturday.

Contesting the Lower House seat and speaking on Saturday will be Suzanna Sheed, Cheryl Hammer and Peter Schwarz.

Ms Sheed is an independent and has represented the seat since being elected at the last election; Ms Hammer is standing on behalf of the Liberal Party and Mr Schwarz the Nationals Party.

All three will have 10 minutes to say who they are and why people should vote for them.

Beneath the Wisteria convenor Robert McLean hopes they will outline what they will do when elected to ensure Victoria, and the Goulburn Valley, is well prepared for the unfolding rigours of a changing climate.

Time will be allowed for a question-and-answer period after the three candidates have spoken.

Beneath the Wisteria is at the northern end of the city’s Maude St Mall. It starts at 11 am, is free and although limited public seating is available, those planning to attend should being a folding chair.
