Victoria to get its first large-scale solar plants

After years of unfulfilled promises, Victoria is on the cusp of getting its first large-scale solar power stations. 

Three farms in the state's northwest are promised to be operating by the start of next year.

Australian company Overland Sun Farming plans to start work in April on separate fields of solar photovoltaic panels at Yatpool, Iraak and Wemen, creating about 200 construction jobs.

Solar energy to become the cheapest source of electricity

Solar energy is set to become the cheapest source of electricity in many parts of the world within the next 10 years, according to a new report released by German think tank, Agora Energiewende.

An ABC story headed: “Solar power set to become cheapest source of energy over next decade, German think tank says”, discusses a report commissioned by an independently funded organisation, designed to steer Germany towards its 80 per cent renewable energy target.

CEO Dr Patrick Graichen said they wanted to see if recent falls in the cost of photovoltaics would continue.

"The finding is there's no end to the cost decline in photovoltaics," he said.

World's largest solar array powers up in Arizona

“Global climate change is here, and it’s only going to get worse, according to a White House report released on Tuesday.”

So says the Scientific American in its story headed: “World’s largest solar Array set to crank out 290 megawatts of sunshine power”.

The story continues: “To combat rising sea levels and blistering summers, the Obama administration has been pushing for clean, renewable energy sources that cut down on carbon emissions. Now one of its projects is poised to pan out: Agua Caliente, the largest photovoltaic solar power facility in the world, was completed last week in Arizona.”
