Survivalist skills lock us out from understanding climate change

Our natural, survivalist skills deny us entry into the space that allows us to understand climate change.

Traits have evolved over time limiting us in such a way that we can best understand the moment and so how we deal with “the now”.

Humans, seemingly exclusively among the world’s life forms, plan for what is ahead, but that is almost entirely a sophisticated extension of what exists.

Rare among us are those who plan for something different and those who do are mostly considered catastrophists or extremists and so are forced to the edge of society.

Most of those devoted to alerting humanity to the dilemmas of climate change are professionals, deep into atmospheric science and while many of the world’s decision makers accept the proved science, there appears to be a disconnect between scientific facts and understandings, and what they claim is the “real world”.

That real world, however, continues to make its case and another weather event driven by climate change is about to engulf New York City.

North East America prepares for a snow storm and hurricane-force winds that it is predicted will both seriously disrupt and disable a city that is still recovering from Hurricane Sandy that swept along the U.S. east coast in October, 2012.

A story in the New York Times headed: “Travel Bans in Place as Northeast Prepares for Harsh Weather” says millions of residents in the Northeast are preparing for the storm that will bring near hurricane-force winds along the coast and as much as three feet of snow. People in the area have been urged to get off the roads and stay indoors.
