Highs and lows in Queensland agriculture in 2016

Chickpeas were a standout performer
 in Queensland in 2016.
The year began with much of Queensland in the grip of drought, but ended on a more positive note, with good rain in most drought-affected areas and commodity prices firm overall.

"The most obvious [highlights] are rain in some parts of the state and we've had some really good livestock prices, record prices in most cases and grain yields are up," AgForce president Grant Maudsley said.

"So in terms of the production side of things, it's certainly turned the corner and looking quite optimistic.

On the political front, 2016 saw proposed changes to vegetation management laws, which were ultimately rejected by State Parliament.

"That was really disappointing, but that led to a positive, because we saw a bit of regional reinvigoration of people and producers and what you can actually achieve if you try hard, led from the front and people follow on an issue," Mr Maudsley said.
