Southeast Australia weather outlook: Dry to stretch into April

A late autumn break is on the cards for farmers across southeast Australia, with well below-average rain forecast for the next three months.

The Bureau of Meteorology’s latest climate outlook suggests parts of the Victorian Mallee and the NSW Riverina could receive just 10-25mm between now and the end of April — less than half of what they would normally expect.

Parts of the Wimmera and central Victoria could receive just 25-50mm with only slightly better — but still well below-average — conditions forecast for southwest Victoria, Gippsland and the North East.

The fairly bleak outlook has also heightened concerns that this year’s fire season could continue well into autumn. The first statewide total fire ban of the summer was ordered on Monday as temperatures peaked at 41.3C at Mildura and 40.7C at Swan Hill.
